Vision Therapy for

Adults

ADULTS AND VISION THERAPY

You are never too old!

Have you ever heard your optometrist or ophthalmologist say that you are too old for vision therapy and to improve your lazy eye (or amblyopia), strabismus or convergence insufficiency? Well, the studies showed that this is not the case and that significant improvement is possible at any age with correct treatment plan. The speed of recovery is the fastest with children who are at the peak of their brain plasticity, yet the brain does not lose its ability to retrain completely – it just loses speed!

Vision therapy has been found as one of the most successful methods of treating amblyopia, strabismus and convergence insufficiency, because it engages visual system actively. Not only does it work for adults as well – some studies even speculated that in some cases, adults can achieve even better results because of higher self-discipline which leads to improved compliance and general maturity of the patient. For successful vision therapy adherence to training program is absolutely essential.

RESEARCH ON ADULT VISION THERAPY

Critical period & brain plasticity

Admittedly, age plays an important role when it comes to treatment of binocular vision problems. At the core of these treatments is brain plasticity, which can be described as the ability of the brain to relearn, retrain and rebuild neurological links – in this case between the eye and the visual centres inside the brains. Brain plasticity is at its peak in the childhood and in that period the improvements are the fastest.

However, longstanding belief that brain plasticity stops completely after that period have been dismissed by several studies that showed that we can effectively treat vision problems such as lazy eye (or amblyopia), strabismus and convergence insufficiency at any age! The younger the patient, the faster the improvement!

Research on Vision Therapy for Adults

For many years practitioners worldwide helped adult patients with vision therapy, despite the professional medical community dismissing any such possibilities. The research outside of their practical experience was scarce, but over the last years and decades, scientific research grew significantly. There are several prominent studies that have since dismissed this practice of “NOTHING CAN BE DONE!” that caused severe consequences to many adults who missed out on effective patient care. Indeed, studies have proven that significant improvements in visual acuity and stereo acuity were recorded at all ages up to 69! Should you be interested in exploring more in-depth, here is a selection of relevant research for the treatment of adults.

I started vision therapy after 30 days of vestibular therapy from toxic mold poisoning from a leaky pipe in our condo's laundry room.  I lost my ability to see clearly and converge.  I had 18 percent use of convergence in my left eye and I was so nauseated and could not drive.  After 12 sessions my ability to converge was raised to 80 percent.  The key to keeping your ability to converge as an adult is what you do at home on a daily basis.  Vision therapy sessions run up to $200 a session.  AmblyoPlay was my answer!  I can work convergence or I can work just my left eye.  It's nice to have a preprogrammed format I can follow, and this helps me on days when I don't want to work the Brock string.  Vision therapy absolutely works for adults and I'm happy to have an at-home app that allows me to reduce my visits with my therapist which saves me thousands.

Hi, my name is Luke, I am 33 years old and have lived with a “lazy eye” all my life. Although amlyoplay is aimed towards children, I was recommended by my opticians to give it a go. I have noticed slight improvements in my vision but am aware the improvements will take time as I am an adult with 34years of correction needed. It would be nice if there was a version for adults, the games are fine as they are but maybe with some tweaking. A couple of games I did find tedious. But on the whole, it has been nice to see the improvements through the 6months. And definitely recommend it for children. As for adults, i think time will tell

Hi, I am 30 years old. I have been using amblyoplay for the past 6 months. It's a really good app. It chooses the games at random and helps you improve your vision for the lazy eye. If practiced daily, you can sense the improvement. Just maintain a good streak and you would see that your gaming performance is improving, double vision is reducing as well. Highly recommended to anyone who wishes to treat amblyopia irrespective of age. It would be great to receive daily, weekly reminders so that one doesn't skip the practice.

I decided to buy AmblyoPlay after doing vision therapy as an adult in the US to gain binocular vision. I’ve since moved abroad and thought this program would be a great way to continue my therapy. Even though the games are designed for children I find them challenging and enjoyable. I’ve been using the program for three months and plan to extend it for another three. I know it takes adults longer to improve vision issues, so I hope to make some small improvements over the six months. Overall I would recommend this program for adults.

As a middle-aged man who had been told since childhood that there was basically nothing that could be done to help with my “lazy eye,” I was skeptical. Especially after constantly being told that this was even more so the case the older I get. That being said, I wanted to give this a chance because anything that gave me some hope was worth the opportunity. I wasn’t expecting drastic results considering my age. I knew that if this was going to have any effect, it was going to take some time. So I definitely think I have a long way to go to truly be where I want things to be, but I have l, without question, noticed a difference and this product is the first thing in nearly 40 years to do that for me! Highly recommend anyone, of any age, give this a shot and at least see if it can help them.

If you’re an adult and you’re on the fence just know that Amblyoplay is great for adults, and not just for kids. I was hesitant at first because it seemed to be aimed at children predominantly but the games were pretty challenging and fun. The goal is to do 30 minutes daily but it’s broken up into two 15 min increments to make it feasible for someone with a busy schedule like me. I could see how this can also keep children engaged. The games require you to challenge yourself by improving your score each time. It keeps you from getting bored. It’s also easy to track your progress because they provide a dashboard that provides you information on changes to your vision by doing weekly vision checks. It also gives you metrics on your process with the games! I purchased six months and noticed some improvement. I decided i am going to continue for a while longer!
