Multimodal App-Based Visual Therapy in Pediatric Amblyopia

AmblyoPlay-based multimodal visual therapy in pediatric anisometropic amblyopia: a pilot study of visual, oculomotor and sensorimotor outcomes

A recent study examined the effects of a six-month, app-based multimodal visual therapy program using AmblyoPlay® in pediatric patients.

29 children aged 7 to 13 years

Key findings

Visual acuity improved by 0.15 logMAR, which is roughly one and a half lines better.
Stereopsis improved from 494 arcsec to 61 arcsec.
Eye movement responses became faster and more accurate.
Hand–eye coordination and motor skills also improved.
Better postural stability.

Summary

This study shows that children using the AmblyoPlay® program for six months experienced meaningful improvements in several important areas of their vision. Not only did their weaker eye see more clearly, but their depth perception, eye movement control, and hand–eye coordination also improved over time.

The results also match what other research has shown: when children follow a structured, binocular (two-eye) therapy program that is fun and engaging, they are more likely to stay consistent, which is one of the biggest factors in successful amblyopia treatment.
