Exotropia and deprivation amblyopia are two conditions that can significantly impact a person’s vision and quality of life. For Thorsten, a 32-year-old man from Germany, these conditions have been a constant challenge. Exotropia, or outward turning of one or both eyes, and deprivation amblyopia, a form of amblyopia caused by a lack of visual stimulation in one eye, have affected his depth perception and visual acuity, making everyday tasks more difficult. Despite these challenges, Thorsten has remained determined to find a solution. In this blog post, we’ll hear from Thorsten about his journey with exotropia and deprivation amblyopia, his decision to pursue vision therapy as an adult, and the progress he has made since beginning treatment.
How did you come across AmblyoPlay?
I was looking for an extra training for my lazy eye because I was annoyed by the patching.
Did you take any previous approaches for curing your lazy eye?
Yes! I have been getting the left eye patched for several years and have also received atropine eye drops (2x per week) in the left eye for a long time.
What was your starting point and how is the progress going?
At the very beginning of my treatment, my lazy eye was around 20% eyesight (20/100). Before starting with AmblyoPlay at approx. 55% (20/40). Now I have 80% eyesight (20/25) in my lazy eye.
For how long have you been using the AmblyoPlay software?
Around 2 months and a half. Vision and squint have improved.
What is your experience with AmblyoPlay from the patient’s perspective?
The program is a great addition to the eye patches and a great motivation to wear your patch during the games. In general, computer games are a great way to train the lazy eye because it is very motivating.
Would you recommend AmblyoPlay to others?
Thorsten added: »I would be very happy about more racing games or the like for older patients and matching eye patches for the games would be great, so I would like to do the program again!«
